PERIOPERATIVE LIAISON NURSE

The Perioperative Liaison Nurse is responsible for assisting with clinical management and administrative coordination of the perioperative nursing unit. This position combines direct clinical care with administrative responsibilities, focusing on preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient care.

Key Responsibilities:

Liaison with Perioperative, Hospital, and Prehospital Personnel: Serve as the primary point of contact between the PTU/PACU/TRU units, hospital departments, external healthcare organizations, and the public to ensure seamless communication and coordination of care.

Maintenance of Communication Loop: Facilitate effective communication between the organization and external surgical and perioperative groups to ensure alignment on standards, protocols, and patient care strategies.

Familiarity with Latest Standards: Stay updated on the latest perioperative care standards and lead the department in meeting and maintaining these standards, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.

Participation in Accreditation Processes: Actively participate in the accreditation application process and site surveys for perioperative services, including preparation and representation during visits.

Development and Promotion of Perioperative Education: Assist in the development and promotion of educational programs for the perioperative staff, focusing on best practices in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care.

New Staff Orientation: Contribute to the development and delivery of perioperative-specific orientation for new staff members, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the demands of the surgical environment.

Quality Improvement Programs: Participate in the development and maintenance of quality improvement programs focused on perioperative care, ensuring continuous enhancement of patient outcomes.

Certification and Education Maintenance: Maintain required certifications and ongoing education in perioperative care as outlined by applicable standards and regulations.

Competency in Perioperative Care: Ensure personal and team competency in perioperative care through continuous professional development and adherence to evidence-based practices.

Patient and Family Education: Promote and participate in patient and family education focused on preoperative and postoperative care, including illness and injury prevention related to surgical procedures.

Resource Availability: Collaborate with clinical leadership to ensure the availability of necessary perioperative equipment, medications, staffing, and other resources by developing and periodically reviewing perioperative standards, policies, and procedures.

Committee Participation: Actively participate in perioperative committees within the hospital and in the broader community, including meetings with relevant liaison nurses and coordinators.

Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, current active California R.N. licensure and clinical skills applicable to nursing specialty. Ability to perform historical, physical and behavioral status assessments of patients using appropriate framework. Demonstrated skill in the delivery of patient care, utilizing team total, primary, or functional systems. Skill in implementing appropriate nursing interventions on a consistent basis. Writing skills to document accurately interventions and patient response. Ability to develop and implement and evaluate patient care plan actively involving patients, family, and staff. Knowledge of POMR charting. Skill in setting priorities, organizing workload to effectively administer direct patient care. Skill in speaking English clearly and distinctly to interpret and describe patient assessments and identify nursing interventions and direct staff. Ability to work effectively with stress and in crisis situations Ability to comply with departmental standards on punctuality, attendance, dress code and varied work schedules. Knowledge and practice in the proper use of safe body mechanics.

ICU experience preferred

2 years telemetry experience
