Description Description

The Health Assistant plays a crucial role in the Head Start Program by ensuring that comprehensive health and nutrition services are delivered in compliance with both State and Federal regulations. Working under the direction of the Health Services Coordinator, the Health Assistant will oversee the coordination and implementation of health screenings and assessments for enrolled Head Start children, communicate screening results to families, and support follow-up care as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Health Screenings & Assessments:
  • Coordinate and conduct health screenings for children enrolled in the Head Start Program, including but not limited to vision, hearing, dental, and developmental assessments.
  • Ensure screenings are conducted within required timeframes and in compliance with all applicable State and Federal regulations.
  • Accurately document and maintain records of all screenings, assessments, and health-related activities in accordance with program requirements.
  • Assist with coordinating immunizations and physical exams for children when needed.
  • Family Communication & Support:
  • Inform families of any failed health screenings, providing clear explanations and guidance on the next steps.
  • Assist families in connecting with healthcare providers or specialists for follow-up care and referrals when necessary.
  • Provide support and resources to families regarding nutrition, hygiene, and overall health practices.
  • Conduct follow-up with families to ensure recommended care or treatment is completed and documented.
  • Compliance & Recordkeeping:
  • Ensure that all health records and documentation comply with Head Start Performance Standards, as well as local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date health files for each child, ensuring confidentiality and proper documentation in the program’s database.
  • Assist in gathering data and preparing reports for monitoring and compliance reviews by Head Start and health-related agencies.
  • Health Education:
  • Assist in delivering health education sessions for children, families, and staff on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, oral health, and general wellness.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle practices among Head Start families through educational materials and group discussions.
  • Program Support:
  • Assist with program outreach activities, including promoting the importance of health screenings and preventative care to families.
  • Collaborate with community health providers, including pediatricians, dentists, and nutritionists, to enhance the resources available to Head Start families.
  • Provide support in managing health supplies, first-aid kits, and maintaining a safe and healthy classroom environment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Medical Assistant, Certified Nurse Assistant - Preferred.
  • Six months to one year of experience in data entry, detailed record keeping and excellent communication, computer/database & keyboarding skills.
  • Must have reliable transportation and possess a valid California Driver License in good standing with DMV required, current liability insurance
  • Must meet State health requirements to include passing a physical examination as a condition of employment, must provide verification of COVID vaccine and TB clearance.
  • Mandatory CPR and Basic First Aid certificate, which employee is responsible to maintain for the duration of their employment with Head Start
