Description Histology Technologist (On call basis) will learn how to perform all routine procedures in orienting, sectioning, and staining tissue specimens to produce slides which will aid pathologists in diagnosis, work in a team focus environment to achieve common goals and meet deadlines to provide quality care to clients and patients. (Incumbent is trained by experienced Histotechnologists in all facets of histology.)
Schedule: various hours Monday - Friday (prefer at least 4 or 5 hours availability per shift, a few days a week)
NOTE: Salary range is reflects level I or level II: selectee must possess expereince in Histology, meet education and certification requirements.*
You Will:
Embed, cut, and stain tissue blocks according to designated procedures
Maintain productivity standards: Microtomy 20 blocks/hour & Embedding 50 blocks/hour
Prepare reagents and stains according to designated procedures
Submit derms and one-steppers: provide backup for Grossing Tech, when needed
Learn & maintain knowledge of current CAP requirements
Assists in maintaining equipment, instruments, and supplies as needed
Perform or assist with validation studies
Assist in operational oversight
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
LEVEL I
Education / Certification
  • Associate degree in science, HT ASCP registry eligible, and/or being On the Job Trained (OJT)

OR Bachelor's degree in science, HTL ASCP registry eligible, and/or being OJT [refer to Board of Certification on ASCP for rules of eligibility for histology certificate (HT)]
Skills and Abilities
  • Previous laboratory experience & knowledge in medical terminology
  • Possess organizational skills and attention to detail & time management skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks & ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment

LEVEL II
Education/Certifications
HT or HTL ASCP certified
Skills and Abilities
Two years of laboratory experience, prefer histology lab experience (Microtomy 20 blocks/hour & Embedding 50 blocks/hour)
skills as in Level I with greater proficiency
