The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee or 1 in the Hematology and Coagulation Division.

REQUIRED POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Requirements for MLS Trainee Accredited Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience.ANDEligible to take the Medical Laboratory Scientist certification examination from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) within eighteen (18) months from date of hire. Failure to attain this certification within eighteen months of date of hire may result in recommendation for termination. Requirements for MLS 1 Accredited Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience.ANDCurrent Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization.ANDOne year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee. Up to one year of on-the-job experience performing clinical testing in a Medical Laboratory Science Program externship may count towards the experience requirement. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES General Duties:
- Perform routine clinical testing in the Hematology/Coagulation Laboratory. Technologist may perform in areas such as routine coagulation, automated cell counts, manual cell counts, differential/morphology, bone marrows, circulating tumor cell, special coagulation, red cell disorder testing, information processing, quality control, blood gas or urinalysis.
- Understand, operate, maintain, troubleshoot and perform corrective maintenance on a variety of laboratory equipment, including sophisticated computerized instruments requiring interpretative knowledge (such as multi-parameter electronic cell counters and automated coagulation analyzers) without supervision.
- Complete patient and quality control procedures within defined time limits, simultaneously coordinate multiple procedures with accuracy, prioritize workload in response to STAT requests, and work with others to ensure that testing is completed.
- Assure the quality and timeliness of patient test results by investigating problems involving specimen collection or handling. Evaluate and solve specimen problems and follow procedures for resulting and documentation.
- Understand theory and physiological importance of each test. Correlate abnormal results with pathologic and physiologic states to determine validity and reasonableness of data. Identify the technical, instrumental or physiologic cause of problems (such as patient variables or interfering substances).
- Take appropriate action on specimens with critical values, abnormal or unusual results. Document actions and findings as necessary.
- Perform and document daily quality control. Evaluate quality control statistics and make judgements concerning accuracy, reproducibility and validity of laboratory method. Institute and document corrective action when quality control results exceed tolerance limits.Teach and train medical laboratory science students and new employees in theory and performance of laboratory testing. Perform competency assessment and written evaluations of trainees or employees as required.
- Perform accurate analysis on CAP and other proficiency testing materials when requested.
- Make and verify quality of reagents.
- Maintain awareness of supply stock and inform lead technologist before they are depleted.
- Exhibit working knowledge of laboratory information system software.
- Assist in development and/or evaluation of new procedures and instruments as assigned.
- Perform special projects and related duties as required.
- May be required to perform venipunctures.
- May be required to prepare and process samples for transport and/or testing.General Responsibilities:
- Perform all analysis of blood, body fluids, cells and products with accuracy and precision. Work with attention to detail and with critical review to avoid errors.
- Handle heavy workloads and meet test completion deadlines through efficient workload organization.
- Display flexibility in adapting to new routines and modifications of work assignments.
- Maintain competency in all areas, including age-specific competency, knowledge of current procedure revisions, etc.
- Maintain a neat, clean and efficient work area by cleaning benches and equipment and replenishing supplies.
- Use effective time management.
- Use resources appropriately – including supplies, instruments and equipment.
- Be aware of compliance and billing issues and follow acceptable practice. Report any observed or suspected compliance violations to area supervisor or department compliance officer.Maintain a neat and clean appearance and dress according to the laboratory dress code.
- Continue education through departmental seminars, journal reading, workshops, etc.
- Attend staff meetings and required training as requested.
- Demonstrate consideration of patients rights and maintain complete confidentiality of all medical, financial, computers, conversations or other sensitive materials which may jeopardize the privacy of others; use minimum necessary patient identifiable information and only to perform job responsibilities and duties.
